Senior living in style

Here at Great Design 4 U, our favorite famous quote is from Steve Jobs “The design is not just what it looks like and feels like. The design is how it works.” This quote is accurate, especially when designing with a particular interest in mind, such as an allergy, disability or limitations, pet durability, and perhaps kid-friendly.

Great Design 4 U was up to the challenge when Cadence Senior Living in beautiful Huntersville, North Carolina, asked us to update their in-home design. In keeping with the residential community’s mantra of “enjoying a vibrant rhythm of life you won’t find anywhere else”, Great Design 4 U helped create a cheerful, energetic, safe space. We would like to share a few helpful tips that we utilized in the updated design. Not only are these great tips for a residential facility model, but these can help guide you in your next home design or renovation!

1.    Minimize "dust collectors"

o We were very mindful of the types and number of accessories that we placed. This reduced the chances of the items getting knocked over, easily breaking, or maybe misplaced.

o We incorporated very few artificial plants. Artificial plants are often neglected in the daily cleaning process, rarely get dusted, and quickly become problematic for those allergy sufferers.

2.    Sherwin-Wiliams Harmony

o This paint selection is not only a beautiful and durable paint but has zero VOC to guarantee good air quality. Thus, ensuring the air is just as beautiful as the space in which it is contained.

3. Mindful fabric selection

o All fabrics chosen are top grade. Of course, in a commercial setting, we want it to be highly durable and cleanable. But just as in my personal home, I would like peace of mind knowing I can easily clean my fabric while keeping a healthy home. And yes, you can have commercial-grade, luxurious fabrics in your home too!

4. Artwork style

o When it came to choosing artwork, we decided on cheerful colors that were calm and relaxing. We elected to go with more abstract art at Cadence Senior Living to appeal to the diverseresidents and tastes. However, we would encourage that in your personal home to go with artwork that is reflective of your style and what brings joy to you.

5. Furniture options

o When choosing your furniture, take into consideration the size and scale appropriate for your room.  Allow for plenty of walking space and avoid packing too much into one area. Not only will this make the room look tight, but it will feel tight and uncomfortable. The new design we have incorporated at Cadence Senior Living Huntersville allows several small intimate areas for small groups to visit with their loved ones or other residents comfortably without filling crammed.
